An introduction.
This is just a quick post to introduce myself (took me long enough didn't it). Well, actually, you'll have to work at finding out about me because the information is actually on my personally website. My "quick" little project turned into something that took months (most of which were spent forgetting about and ignoring the project).
You can find all the details at http://www.nensha.com/wp/

Playtime
Here's a one-question IQ Test to help you decide how you should spend the rest of your day! Think this through carefully. It is not a trick or a joke; it is a legitimate IQ question.
There is a mute who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.
Now, if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?
Think about it first before looking down for the answer...
He opens his mouth and says "I would like to buy a pair of Sunglasses".
If you got this wrong -- please turn off your computer and call it a day.
I've got mine shutting down right now. You know you missed it too, so shut down your computer.

The Great Brownie Bakeoff in CSC
The bakers were ordered to clear the room so the judges couldn't be bribed. The judges planned their strategy in order to savor every morsel before them. They all tasted, retasted, whispered amongst themselves and declared that this was the best job EVER!

Christy's The Customer Graduation Story
I had a little blurb planned - until Susan L. shared her presentation with me! Hers was going to be great! Inspired by her creativity - I climbed out of my box & here's what I came up with:
Farmer Brown's Fuzzy Bunnies
Once upon a time in the land of Cee Cee there lived a bunch of fuzzy bunnies.
Each bunny lived in its own little burrow underneath Farmer Brown’s field.
In general the bunnies lead happy, productive lives. Each would come up out of their burrow and help themselves to Farmer Brown’s produce, always leaving enough behind for the other bunnies and trying not to destroy the field so that Farmer Brown could keep planting yummy carrots for them each year, though they sometimes weren’t as careful as they could have been.
Occasionally the bunnies would pass each other as they wandered from burrow to field and back. The bunnies would twitch their noses at each other politely and even more occasionally one would help the other dig up a particularly stubborn carrot.
But for the most part each bunny went from their burrow to the field and back in their own little bunny way.
They thought life was good.
Then one day a wild hare named Marla came bounding (as only a wild hare can bound!) into Farmer Brown’s field – skidded to a halt and shouted “You silly bunnies aren’t living up to your full, fuzzy potential!”
The bunnies stopped – some mid carrot – and stared at her. Then they stared at each other. One or two stared ate the sky hoping for rain and a reason to escape this wild hare and her speechifying.
But the wild hare won them over with her wild, winning ways!
Soon she’d taught them that if they worked together they would truly see what a happy, productive life could be!
She started by having the bunnies build tunnels between each of their individual burrows, then they built a large burrow in the center of all the little burrows where they could store all the extra carrots they were gathering by working in new streamlined “Carrot Cultivation Teams”.
Further, the bunnies then started working with the other animals in and around Farmer Brown’s field – the goats butted in and made sure the field was never over harvested and the soil not destroyed. The birds gathered seeds and re-planted in neat little rows as only birds can, and the beavers from the stream that ran beside the field set up a produce stand on the side of the road.
Farmer Brown never questioned how or why his farm suddenly became self sufficient, he simply spent the rest of his happy days relaxing at the fishing hole.
Never one to rest, Marla the wild hare headed off into the next field over…there were some gophers there in sore need of a helping paw!

Marla's Vacation with Nate

Friday, March 30, 2007

In January Nigel taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to the EDS management team. We covered:
• Habit 1 – Be proactive
• Habit 2 – Begin with the end in mind
• Habit 3 – Put first things first
• Habit 4 – Think win-win
• Habit 5 – Seek first to understand, then to be understood
• Habit 6 – Synergize
• Habit 7 – Sharpen the saw
After our training we divided into teams and met weekly for ½ - 1 hr to discuss our homework. We found these weekly meetings to be the best therapy!
This week several of us graduated – above is our picture.

The Big Day...
Madeleine (aka Maddie or Maddie Lion or Labradorable), my 6 month old puppy, and I have been practicing her commands for weeks. She has been close to perfect with her sits, stays, downs, comes, and stands. Good girl! She barely even acknowledges the 2 carefully placed dog biscuits tempting her on the kitchen floor as we snake around them for her 'figure 8's'. Very good girl! She is even trotting along by my side now when we go for walks, which is a relief considering how she loved to forge ahead to eagerly greet whatever smell she would happen upon next.
So tonight, while she was deducted some points for excitedly greeting the judges rather than holding her 'stand for examination' position, her adorable personality scored big in brownie points! Plus she successfully held her 'sit-stay' for 1 minute and her 'down-stay' for 3 minutes. That is quite an eternity for a pup! Besides her diploma, her big reward tonight was a little play session with her boyfriend, Gunner, a 7 month old black Labrador.
It was quite a successful night. I am so proud of her!
Below is a clip of our little Maddie Lion just 4 short months ago bounding through the yard. Oh, how they grow up so fast!!

Downsizing didn't work!
Well... after not quite 2 years of living in very close quarters, with no extra storage space for my bears and books and Christmas decorations - and a 2-car garage for all that "guy stuff" that my husband has collected - it was time to take advantage of the current housing market in Arizona, and move back up again!
Sometime around Easter weekend, we will be moving to our newer, bigger house - back to 2 stories, with extra storage room, a 3-car garage, a patch of grass for the Schnauzers, and a pool and spa... ahhhh!
If you ever visit our "neck of the woods", be sure to look us up!

Spring Skiing
I wasn't a skier when I moved to Colorado, and it took me a few years of living here before I tried it out. I was hesitant to hit the slopes because I had a bad experience skiing in Wisconsin when I was 12. At the time, I didn't know how to ski, but I wanted to hang out with my friends who were in the ski club at school. So I found myself on a trail that was too difficult for me. I ended up skiing straight down the "mountain" (really only a big hill) completely out of control. I stopped only when I skiied into the parking lot, crashed into a parked car and fell over. I took off my skis, walked into the shelter, and made up my mind that I would never put on another pair of skis.
After moving to Colorado, however, that changed. Chris, my fiancé, is an avid skier, so with encouragement from him, I decided to give skiing another try. I love it! I only ski a few times a year, so I'm only at an advanced beginner level, but it's been so much fun to learn a new skill. Most of my skiing trips have been to Winter Park. I've been very pleased with their ski school. I've often taken advantage of their half-day lessons and then spent the remainder of the day trying out my newly acquired skills on the slopes.
I hope to ski at least two more times this season, and then I'll have hiking in the mountains to look forward to later this summer—and golfing!

Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup
Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup
½ t. coarse salt, plus more for seasoning
½ c. wild rice
3 t. olive oil
1-1/4 lbs assorted mushrooms, such as button, cremini, shitake (stems removed), and chanterelle, sliced into bite-size pieces
1 T. unsalted butter
3 leeks (white and pale green parts only), quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced
1 T. Porcini powder (in a spice mill or coffer grinder, pulse 1 ounce dried porcini mushrooms to a fine powder)
½ c. sherry or Madeira
3 T. soy sauce
6 c. chicken stock
2 T. heavy cream
1 T. finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
- In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add salt and wild rice. Cover; reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until tender, 45 – 50 minutes. Drain; set aside.
- In a large saucepan, heat half the oil over medium-high heat. Add half the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and tender, about 7 minutes, transfer to bowl. Repeat with remaining oil and mushrooms.
- Reduce heat to medium-low. Melt butter; add leeks. Cook, stirring, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in mushroom power; cook 1 minute. Add sherry and soy sauce; cook 1 minute more.
- Add stock to pot; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms; return to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook 20 minutes. Stir in wild rice, cream, and parsley; adjust seasoning, and serve.
My modifications –
Regular salt in wild rice and I don’t use extra salt on the mushrooms. I use regular salted butter.
I use twice as much oil to cook the mushrooms and use more like 1-1/2 lbs of mushrooms.
Enjoy!
Susan Lalor
