An introduction.

Hi!

This is just a quick post to introduce myself (took me long enough didn't it). Well, actually, you'll have to work at finding out about me because the information is actually on my personally website. My "quick" little project turned into something that took months (most of which were spent forgetting about and ignoring the project).

You can find all the details at http://www.nensha.com/wp/

Was that a hot dog running up the mountain??

As some of you may know, my fiance, Sander, is quite the athlete and quite the character!! On Saturday, he participated in the Pikes Peak Ascent, which is a 13.32 mile run up Pikes Peak with an elevation gain of 7815 feet! Impressively, he came in 88th out of 485 finishers! What's even more impressive is that he did it in a hot dog suit! He is quoted in both the news article and video at this link:

Playtime

One question IQ Test

Here's a one-question IQ Test to help you decide how you should spend the rest of your day! Think this through carefully. It is not a trick or a joke; it is a legitimate IQ question.

There is a mute who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Now, if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?

Think about it first before looking down for the answer...

He opens his mouth and says "I would like to buy a pair of Sunglasses".
If you got this wrong -- please turn off your computer and call it a day.
I've got mine shutting down right now. You know you missed it too, so shut down your computer.

The Great Brownie Bakeoff in CSC

The judges opened freshed bottles of water in order to clear their palates between bites and anxiously awaited while the team of bakers put the finishing touches on their brownie creations. The plates were assembled and labeled alphabetically. A hush settled over the room as the judges were handed their instructions.

The bakers were ordered to clear the room so the judges couldn't be bribed. The judges planned their strategy in order to savor every morsel before them. They all tasted, retasted, whispered amongst themselves and declared that this was the best job EVER!
The judges emerged from Soda Springs to announce their decisions. And the winners are:

Best Brownie Overall - Susan Vecellio
Runnerup - Mirielle Bock

Most Original - Mirielle Bock
Runnerup - Susan Vecellio
Best Presentation - Susan Vecellio
Runnerup -Mirielle Bock

No Runnerup

Thanks to all the Bakers and all the Judges for their hard work. :)

Of course, Darrell stopped by after the festivities to clean
things up. I swear he has the best nose for food smells!

The question now is whether Susan will share the recipe?

4.04.07 OSS The Customer Graduation

Graduation day arrived and all were in great spirits. The room was decorated and ready to go. The walls we were anxious to hear what everyone had to say about The Customer. The walls thought the discussions in each of the 4 weekly sessions they heard some really active discussions. Now they were waiting to hear how people had put their experiences in class to work.

Stories were told about how The Customer was helping communications in VIC and coaching in QA. Both teams say they can hear the difference in the calls they receive. Others found that the behavior styles inventories help them understand and work with others better. If you want more, talk everyone on the team to learn more about their experience with the program and the materials.

CSC OSS Team

Middle row: Karen Geldhof; Kristina Dunn; Susan Lalor, Susan Vecellio, Lori Ameln, Heather Goedjen, Marla Koupal.
Front Row: Tracy Helsing, Christy Pitto, Mary Weaver)

They are such strong believers in team play that they had all of us participate in the chorus. They are Tracy Helsing, Mary Weaver, Susan Vecellio, Jenn Shockey, & Jen Ashcraft!!! (The video is too large to load to this blog so now you get to go on a trek--Go to the EDS Server/Select file named--4.4.07 Video The Willing-Hams /Put your head sets on before you start the video so you can hear them and the great chorus. )

Willing-Ham script

We are Willing Hams and we’re here to say,
We all behave in a different way.
Some of us bossy and some of us meek
But together, we’ll make it to the end of the week.

My name is Mar and I like to chat.
About this thang and about that.

And that ain’t no pun.
It’s all about work, I like to joke.
Nah, it’s all about da peeps.
And I ain’t blowin no smoke! (Repeat Chorus)

I’m Jen A from QA.
I’m a supporter.
I like routine.
I have an even temperament,
I won’t cause a scene.
I make decisions slowly,
I’m not hurried for time.
I hang onto old friends
Because they are mine! (Repeat Chorus)

We be Susan and Tracy,

Christy's The Customer Graduation Story

For our The Customer Graduation ceremony yesterday, Marla asked us each to give a brief presentation in which we would share with the group what valuable lessons we personally learned from the course.

I had a little blurb planned - until Susan L. shared her presentation with me! Hers was going to be great! Inspired by her creativity - I climbed out of my box & here's what I came up with:

Farmer Brown's Fuzzy Bunnies

Once upon a time in the land of Cee Cee there lived a bunch of fuzzy bunnies.

Each bunny lived in its own little burrow underneath Farmer Brown’s field.

In general the bunnies lead happy, productive lives. Each would come up out of their burrow and help themselves to Farmer Brown’s produce, always leaving enough behind for the other bunnies and trying not to destroy the field so that Farmer Brown could keep planting yummy carrots for them each year, though they sometimes weren’t as careful as they could have been.

Occasionally the bunnies would pass each other as they wandered from burrow to field and back. The bunnies would twitch their noses at each other politely and even more occasionally one would help the other dig up a particularly stubborn carrot.

But for the most part each bunny went from their burrow to the field and back in their own little bunny way.

They thought life was good.

Then one day a wild hare named Marla came bounding (as only a wild hare can bound!) into Farmer Brown’s field – skidded to a halt and shouted “You silly bunnies aren’t living up to your full, fuzzy potential!”

The bunnies stopped – some mid carrot – and stared at her. Then they stared at each other. One or two stared ate the sky hoping for rain and a reason to escape this wild hare and her speechifying.

But the wild hare won them over with her wild, winning ways!

Soon she’d taught them that if they worked together they would truly see what a happy, productive life could be!

She started by having the bunnies build tunnels between each of their individual burrows, then they built a large burrow in the center of all the little burrows where they could store all the extra carrots they were gathering by working in new streamlined “Carrot Cultivation Teams”.

Further, the bunnies then started working with the other animals in and around Farmer Brown’s field – the goats butted in and made sure the field was never over harvested and the soil not destroyed. The birds gathered seeds and re-planted in neat little rows as only birds can, and the beavers from the stream that ran beside the field set up a produce stand on the side of the road.

Farmer Brown never questioned how or why his farm suddenly became self sufficient, he simply spent the rest of his happy days relaxing at the fishing hole.

Never one to rest, Marla the wild hare headed off into the next field over…there were some gophers there in sore need of a helping paw!

Marla's Vacation with Nate

Nate's spring break and my vacation to Los Angeles provided a bit of excitement this time. We had two major celebrity sightings and I was almost run over by a (pod, herd, hoard?? you choose) of papparazzi. Papparazzi are a phenomenon! They hide in corners, stand on car tops and then, when the celebrity arrives they hold their cameras high over their heads and move as one cell with the celebrity as the heart of the amoeba. They move with amazing speed (herd of gazelles comes to mind). There is no way you want to be in their way or you will be trampled.

Now--for the details. Britney Spears arrived at the Millenium on Saturday the 24th just after Nate and I arrived for his first class of the week. He was already in the classroom when she arrived with body guards. She was in the "celebrity room" when I arrived to watch class. However, as soon as class started she came out and completed the warm up exercises at the back of the room. It was amazing to watch everyone run in with water for her and then a Starbucks. Once the exercises were over she gave the class about 10 more minutes of her time and went back to her "room". She left before class was over. However, entering and leaving she was within a foot of Nate and he was happy. (BTW--she had a wig on and wore a hat--she was in pretty good shape for having had two kids but the spankies were a bit tight.)

On the same day we saw Marques Houston ("You Got Served 1 & 2" and various albums).

We also tried out the Debbie Reynolds studio hip hop classes and had good quality instructors there too.

In addition to dancing we took a bike ride along the beach from Venice to Santa Monica pier and toured the Getty museum. We had great family time with my brother-in-law and his wife and spent most of our nights at dance class. Oh-yes, did I mention driving? I have definitely logged chauffer hours once again. Also, I think we had over 25 Bentley and Rolls Royce Phantom sightings and at least 10 Ferrari's. Nate was in heaven.

We arrived home (Denver) on Friday. Nate then had the Monsters of Hip Hop Dance convention. The instructors/choreographers at this session have worked with Pink, Britney, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keyes, Missy Elliot, "You Got Served", Beyonce, N'Sync, B2K and more.
Nate, was really happy when he finally got noticed this weekend. He put two new "feathers" in his cap. One--he won a scholarship to the Millenium in Los Angeles. (This pays for his classes next time we go to LA) and he got an invitation to speak with MSA, the largest dance/talent agency in L.A. So he is feeling like he is on his way. Now we get to keep him grounded until he gets out of school.
Next year his goal is to dance well enough to make it to the large Monsters show in Los Angeles that is held every August. When he makes that we'll then go talk to the agent (2008).
I'm glad to be home. Tim didn't miss us too much--he is in the final tax crunch. We are all looking forward to April 16th so we can spend some time with him too.

In January Nigel taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to the EDS management team. We covered:
• Habit 1 – Be proactive
• Habit 2 – Begin with the end in mind
• Habit 3 – Put first things first
• Habit 4 – Think win-win
• Habit 5 – Seek first to understand, then to be understood
• Habit 6 – Synergize
• Habit 7 – Sharpen the saw

After our training we divided into teams and met weekly for ½ - 1 hr to discuss our homework. We found these weekly meetings to be the best therapy!

This week several of us graduated – above is our picture.

lottery dreams...

Ok...i was thinking we could play a little game. What is a ridiculous splurge you would make if you won the lottery. I'm not talking about a house or paying your bills off..but the thing you would get that almost makes you laugh. For me it would be 2 things: a closet that's ONLY for my shoes! I think that would rock. Also, this candy green cadillac i saw in a video...I'm not really a cadi kinda girl...but I think i'd get it! Ok...your turn!!! Let your imagination go wild!!!!!!!

A Special Visitor

We had a very special visitor stop by in Kansas today. Isabella "Bella" Vansell stopped by to see us and she brought Jerry and Jaree with her! Isabella is absolutely gorgeous and not shy at all. She wanted each of us to hold her and she looked striking in her lovely lavendar ensemble. Jerry and Jaree have had Bella for 4 weeks now, 2 weeks in China and 2 weeks at home. She is acclimating well and starting to sleep through the night. She is 11 months old with her first birthday coming up on April 9th! She is starting to eat baby food and seems to like everything she tastes...reminds me of her Dad. Jerry and Jaree have introduced her to a "ba ba" (pacifier) to save her poor thumb from her bottom two teeth (the only teeth she has right now).

Jerry misses us all and it was great to see him and meet the newest member of the Vansell family!!!

The Big Day...

She did it! Our little girl graduated from obedience school tonight! It was quite exciting!

Madeleine (aka Maddie or Maddie Lion or Labradorable), my 6 month old puppy, and I have been practicing her commands for weeks. She has been close to perfect with her sits, stays, downs, comes, and stands. Good girl! She barely even acknowledges the 2 carefully placed dog biscuits tempting her on the kitchen floor as we snake around them for her 'figure 8's'. Very good girl! She is even trotting along by my side now when we go for walks, which is a relief considering how she loved to forge ahead to eagerly greet whatever smell she would happen upon next.

So tonight, while she was deducted some points for excitedly greeting the judges rather than holding her 'stand for examination' position, her adorable personality scored big in brownie points! Plus she successfully held her 'sit-stay' for 1 minute and her 'down-stay' for 3 minutes. That is quite an eternity for a pup! Besides her diploma, her big reward tonight was a little play session with her boyfriend, Gunner, a 7 month old black Labrador.

It was quite a successful night. I am so proud of her!

Below is a clip of our little Maddie Lion just 4 short months ago bounding through the yard. Oh, how they grow up so fast!!

Lori

Downsizing didn't work!

After 5 years in the Black Forest - well, at the edge of the Black Forest! - in a BIG house, my husband and I were terribly excited about our move to a smaller, one-story house in the Phoenix area. We would no longer have stairs to climb or 5 acres to keep up - not a blade of grass in the new yard! - just clean the pool, and we'd be "good to go".
Well... after not quite 2 years of living in very close quarters, with no extra storage space for my bears and books and Christmas decorations - and a 2-car garage for all that "guy stuff" that my husband has collected - it was time to take advantage of the current housing market in Arizona, and move back up again!
Sometime around Easter weekend, we will be moving to our newer, bigger house - back to 2 stories, with extra storage room, a 3-car garage, a patch of grass for the Schnauzers, and a pool and spa... ahhhh!
If you ever visit our "neck of the woods", be sure to look us up!

Spring Skiing

I know that the launch of this blog is celebratory of the start of spring, so perhaps an entry on skiing seems a little out of place, but that's one of the great things about Colorado—the weather is such that one could ski and golf on the same day! After living in Wisconsin and Texas, it was exciting to move to Colorado five years ago and be able to take advantage of the recreation that the mountains have to offer.

I wasn't a skier when I moved to Colorado, and it took me a few years of living here before I tried it out. I was hesitant to hit the slopes because I had a bad experience skiing in Wisconsin when I was 12. At the time, I didn't know how to ski, but I wanted to hang out with my friends who were in the ski club at school. So I found myself on a trail that was too difficult for me. I ended up skiing straight down the "mountain" (really only a big hill) completely out of control. I stopped only when I skiied into the parking lot, crashed into a parked car and fell over. I took off my skis, walked into the shelter, and made up my mind that I would never put on another pair of skis.

After moving to Colorado, however, that changed. Chris, my fiancé, is an avid skier, so with encouragement from him, I decided to give skiing another try. I love it! I only ski a few times a year, so I'm only at an advanced beginner level, but it's been so much fun to learn a new skill. Most of my skiing trips have been to Winter Park. I've been very pleased with their ski school. I've often taken advantage of their half-day lessons and then spent the remainder of the day trying out my newly acquired skills on the slopes.

I hope to ski at least two more times this season, and then I'll have hiking in the mountains to look forward to later this summer—and golfing!

Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup

This is about the best mushroom soup I've ever tasted. I'm sure you'll all like it, except all you mushroom haters.

Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup

½ t. coarse salt, plus more for seasoning
½ c. wild rice
3 t. olive oil
1-1/4 lbs assorted mushrooms, such as button, cremini, shitake (stems removed), and chanterelle, sliced into bite-size pieces
1 T. unsalted butter
3 leeks (white and pale green parts only), quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced
1 T. Porcini powder (in a spice mill or coffer grinder, pulse 1 ounce dried porcini mushrooms to a fine powder)
½ c. sherry or Madeira
3 T. soy sauce
6 c. chicken stock
2 T. heavy cream
1 T. finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

  1. In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add salt and wild rice. Cover; reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until tender, 45 – 50 minutes. Drain; set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat half the oil over medium-high heat. Add half the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and tender, about 7 minutes, transfer to bowl. Repeat with remaining oil and mushrooms.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low. Melt butter; add leeks. Cook, stirring, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in mushroom power; cook 1 minute. Add sherry and soy sauce; cook 1 minute more.
  4. Add stock to pot; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms; return to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook 20 minutes. Stir in wild rice, cream, and parsley; adjust seasoning, and serve.

    My modifications –
Regular salt in wild rice and I don’t use extra salt on the mushrooms. I use regular salted butter.
I use twice as much oil to cook the mushrooms and use more like 1-1/2 lbs of mushrooms.

Enjoy!

Susan Lalor
